Abstract

1,166,179. Acoustic measurement of temperature. CORNING GLASS WORKS. 20 Oct., 1967 [25 Oct., 1966], No. 47762/67. Heading H4D. The temperature of a region is measured by passing gas from a constant pressure source through the region to actuate a sound generator and measuring the generated sound frequency. As shown, a sheath 10 closed by end 11 and by finned housing 20 is disposed in the region and contains a resonant cavity 14 with a tubular lip 16 over which the gas is blown to generate sound waves which are detected by dynamic microphone 37. The gas is supplied via flow regulator 28, pressure regulator 29, heat exchanger 31 and pressure reducing nozzle 32 to tube 18 in which its temperature reaches that of the region. An oven 30 is maintained at a temperature at least as high as the highest ambient temperature and prevents ambient temperature variations in the region of nozzle 32 from affecting the nozzle output pressure. Frequency counter 42 indicates the microphone output frequency or may be calibrated directly in temperature units. Examples of gases, dimensions and materials for constructing units 10, 13, 18 and 20 are given for use in measuring furnace temperatures up to 2000‹ C. In a modification the opening of the resonant cavity 14 is arranged to face the wall of sheath 10 instead of the end 11.
