Abstract

1,165,872. Bar feeding. MACFARLANE THIRSK (ENGS.) Ltd. 5 Feb., 1968, No. 5678/68. Headings B3B and B3T. A bar feed device for automatic lathes comprises a cylindrical body portion 1 with an axial bore 2 and a co-operating separate part 6 held in co-operating engagement therewith by an encircling spring 9, the bore 2 being of different diameter at the feed and discharge ends of the device respectively which are connected by way of a conical taper 7. In operation bar stock being fed through the device entering the feed end thereof by way of a taper 3 and engaging the taper 7 to rock or radially displace the part 6 against the action of the spring 9 whereby the bar is gripped during a machining operation. More than one separate part may be provided on the body portion hence providing a plurality of finger type gripping member co-operating with the encircling spring. The discharge end of the bore of the device is also provided with a taper 8 to permit the re-entry of bar material. Serrated co-operating edges may also be provided on the abutting surfaces between the body I and part 6.
