Abstract

1,165,733. Deceleration responsive brake system. GIRLING Ltd. 26 June, 1967 [2 July, 1966], No. 29784/66. Heading F2F. Brake-applying force on a piston 48, pivots a resilient lever 30 about a fulcrum pin 33 and is resisted by a deceleration responsive arm 26 acting on the end 36 of the lever 30, an intermediate point on the lever acting on a brake control valve spindle 53. The valve comprises a head 58 seated by a spring washer 60 on a member 59 to control air flow from an aperture 64, filter 62, passage 66 and bores 65, 67, to an outlet 68 connected to a servo-operating the brakes. In the completely unoperated position, the piston 48 is disengaged from the lever 30, and the adjacent end of the lever is urged by a spring 34 until the pin 33 engages the opposite end to that shown of a slot 32 in a lug 31 attached to the lever, whereby the lever acts about a different fulcrum 37 to apply a force at 36 to the arm 26, via a thrust member 29. Movement of the piston 48 to the right (as shown) compresses spring 34 and maintains pressure on the deceleration responsive arm 26. The latter is pivoted about its upper end (as shown) to an arm 25 fast with a spindle 14 driven by the vehicle wheel(s). A flywheel 11 is mounted by bearings 13 on the spindle and, with constant wheel speed the flywheel attains the same speed as the spindle. Relative rotation between the flywheel and spindle, due to deceleration of the latter, causes relative motion between a ball 28 carried at the end of arm 26 and the adjacent face of the flywheel, causing the ball to run up a ramp 27 and force the arm 26 to the left about its pivot. The resulting force acting on the spindle 53 of the brake control valve 54 tends to close the valve, thereby limiting braking to avoid locking and skidding, and the resilient nature of the lever ensures that below a certain value of input force on the piston 48, the braking is proportional over a range to the input force. Above this value the brake valve 54 is fully open.
