Abstract
1,165,288. Rear axle suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 7 April, 1967, No. 16063/67. Heading B7D. In a motor vehicle suspension comprising generally longitudinal leaf springs 9 which support the spring mass of the vehicle on a rigid rear axle 1, the springs 9 converge rearwardly and are so connected to the spring mass that lateral movement of the axle 1 under cornering forces produces rear wheel understeer. Eyes 13 at the front ends of the springs 9 are connected to the spring mass by rubber bushes which allow limited rotation of each spring about a vertical axis. Rubber elements 21 bonded between brackets 17, 19 attached to the spring mass and to the springs 9 permit limited transverse movement of the rear end of each spring and also permit rearward movement of the rear end of each sprung under load. Links 23 secured to the axle 1 are pivotally connected to plates 25 on the springs 9 through rubber bushes permitting slight relative movement between the axle and springs. An extension 27 of the differential casing 3 is connected to the sprung mass by rubber bushes 29 positioned such that the links 23 exert a forward force on the springs. Shock absorbers 7 are connected between the sprung mass and the springs, and rubber blocks 31 are mounted on the sprung mass to engage the springs and provide a variable rate suspension.
