1,165,236. Stabilizing polyoxymethylene by after-treatment. SOC. CHIMIQUE DES CHARBONNAGES. 27 June, 1968 [27 June, 1967], No. 29620/67. Heading C3P. Polyoxymethylenes having a reduced viscosity of from 0.7 to 1.1 and a sulphite number of up to 7.5 and a decomposition constant at 222‹ C. of less than 5, are stabilized by reaction with an acid anhydride, isocyanate or isothiocyanate in the presence of an antioxidant having blocked phenolic groups, at a temperature above the melting-point of the polyoxymethylene, and then adding a formaldehyde acceptor to the molten product obtained. The initial polyoxymethylene may be obtained by subjecting a polyoxymethylene, obtained by the radiochemical polymerization of trioxan in the solid phase and having a reduced viscosity greater than 3 and a sulphite number less than 5, to controlled radiolysis with ionizing radiation. In the examples, polyoxymethylenes with viscosities and sulphite numbers in the specified ranges, obtained by radiolysis of higher molecular weight polymers, were reacted with butyric anhydride, acetic anhydride, phenyl isocyanate, and phenyl isocyanate in the presence of antioxidants containing etherified phenolic groups, and the product mixed with biuret, polyesteramides or a nylon polyamide.
