A textile web 20 formed from natural fibres or a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres is singed and thereafter washed or impregnated, the temperature of the web 20 being maintained after singeing so that the web enters the washing or impregnating medium at substantially the same temperature as that to which it has been raised during singeing. As shown, the web 20 passes through a singeing machine 10 provided with a hood 30 and three burners 13, 14, 15. The burner 15 is positioned close to a web outlet 8 which forms an inlet to a machine 9 comprising a washing chamber 11 and an impregnating chamber 12. The chamber 11 is provided with cascades 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, an overflow 26, guide rollers 19, a steam spray 17 and an inlet 18 for fresh hot water. Each cascade is connected through a valve 28 to a discharge pipe 27. The time lapse between the web passing the burner 15 and its entry into the treatment medium is in the region of one-half second. Compression rolls 16 are provided between the chambers 11, 12. The chamber 12 contains a desizing mixture heated by a heater 33 and the overflow from this chamber passes to the cascade 23 of the chamber 11 through a pipe 29 and a valve 28. After leaving the chamber 12 the web 20 passes between compression rollers 31 having a weighted counter-roller to a feed roller 32. In a modification (not shown), the web 20 is treated with saturated steam intermediate the singeing and its entry into the washing or impregnating medium.
