1,165,114. 5-Norbornene 2-methyl esters. UGINE KXTHLMANN. 15 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23152/68. Heading C2C. 2 - Alkanoyloxymethyl - 5 - norbornenes of the formula where R is C 1 -C 4 alkyl, are obtained by carrying out a Tishchento reaction of a mixture of 5-norbornene-2-carboxaldehyde and a lower aliphatic aldehyde RCHO, in the presence of an aluminium alcoholate as a catalyst. Examples are given where R is methyl and n-propyl. The following compounds are obtained as by-products 5 - norbornene - 2 - methanol, 5-norbornene ethyl and n-butyl carboxylate and 2 - ( - norborn - 5 - ene - 2 - cyloxymethyl -) norborn - 5 - ene.
