System for starting the engine of a dieselelectric locomotive by means of its A.C. generator includes an inverter controlled in dependence on the rotational position of the rotor of the generator. The generator 2 is excited by closing a switch 7 to connect it with a D.C. source 8. A.C. is now supplied by a thyristor inverter 21 equipped with chokes and smoothing capacitors (Fig. 3, not shown) and the phase and frequency of the A.C. are controlled by a unit 22 which receives signals from a photo-electric detector 23. The detector responds to both the position and the speed of rotation of the rotor of the generator 2. When the engine 1 fires, the inverter 21 is disconnected and the generator 2 supplies the traction motors F through a rectifier 13. During starting, this rectifier takes the return current from the generator. The switch 7 remains closed after the engine has fired so that excitation current can be supplied to the generator, and a regulator 9 reduces the excitation as the rotational speed of the generator increases.
