1,164,341. Treating tobacco. INTERNATIONAL FLAVORS & FRAGRANCES Inc. 4 Jan., 1967 [11 Jan., 1966; 9 Nov., 1966], No. 613/67. Heading A2C. [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] Tobacco products are improved in flavour and smoking characteristics by incorporating a lactic acid ester of an isopienoid alcohol, (see Division C2) optionally with a polymer of lactic acid. The alcohols used to prepare the esters may be nerol, geraniol, terpineol, farnesol and nerolidol and alcohols prepared by the polymeisation of isopiene are also listed. Mixtures of esters may also be used, and the agents may be applied directly to the tobacco or incorporated in the finished product by treating the paper wrappers or tobacco leave wrappers. Reconstituted tobacco, and tobacco substitutes such as lettuce and cabbage leaves may be similarly treated.
