Abstract

1,164,236. Flight simulators. KOLLSMAN INSTRUMENT CORP. 10 Aug., 1967, No. 36711/67. Heading B7W. [Also in Division G2] An optical pick-off used to transmit wideangle pictures of a landscape model or picture to a viewing screen in a flight simulations device for training pilots comprises a wide-angle optical system or near-body pick-off comprises a beamsplitter prism 20 with a diagonal semi-silvered interface between first and second adjacent outer faces of the prism which each define a separate line of sight 30, 31 and which each include light modifying means, such as light filters, a portion of the light entering each outer face being directed along a common path via the beam splitter interface to means responsive to the modification of the light, such as a dichroio beam splitter 36, which directs the light from the first and second faces to first and second viewing means, such as vidicons 47, 50. The pick-off system is moved in response to controls operated by the pilot. Image-rotation prisms 45, 48 are turned by computer-controlled servos and counteract image-rotation imported by the beam splitter 20 and prism 34 as the prism 20 rotates about pitch, roll, and yaw axes. The above system, giving forward and lefthand views of the landscape, may be improved by the addition of a second optical system giving right-hand viewing with a total horizontal viewing angle of 278 degrees.
