Abstract

1351157 Aircraft simulator SINGER CO 5 Aug 1971 [25 Aug 1970] 36816/71 Heading H4F In an aircraft simulator the video signal from a television camera 42 is arranged to be displayed in response to simulated changes in the position of an observer, i.e. azimuth and elevation changes from a computer 36, at any position 67 on a plurality (four as shown) of television raster displays 52a-52d arranged to form a continuous raster display area 66, the image 67 appearing as a continuous raster displayed on one or more of the displays. Background information of low detail is displayed on those portions of the total viewing area 66 not covered by the image 67, e.g. ground and sky information controlled by attitude inputs from the computer. Visibility modulators may be included to simulate fog. The image source for the television camera 42 comprises a film taken by a motion picture camera on an aircraft, perspective transformation being effected optically or electronically on the resulting video in response to simulator control signals from a computer. Data for the computer relating to the line of flight etc. are also recorded on the film. The film transport comprises a standard pulsed pulldown type. The video signal is distributed via video switches 54a-54d to the displays, these switches being controlled by a switch logic 56 to properly position, along with fixed sync delays 57c, the image in the desired position on the total display. The sync delays are so arranged that a continuous raster in both horizontal and vertical directions is effected over all the displays, e.g. line trace 70 is followed by line trace 72. The image 67 is positioned in the continuous raster in dependence upon the azimuth and elevation signals from the computer which control the video switches 54a-54d and the variable sync delays 57a and 57b which adjust the relative time relationship between the camera raster and the display raster scans. The wide-angle display which is achieved by combining a number of display devices may be effected as shown in Fig. 6, by three tiers of mirror beam splitter infinity image CRT displays, the horizontal field of view being increased by butting together two or more (e.g. three) such tiered displays as shown in Fig. 7. Each display comprises a CRT 114, a spherical mirror 110 and a beam splitter 112, the spherical mirror and beam splitter of adjacent tiers being placed close together as shown in Fig. 6.
