Abstract
1,164,093. Grapnels. PIRELLI S.p.A. 15 Feb., 1968 [13 March, 1967], No. 7406/68. Heading B7S. A device which severs and recovers a cable from a sea bed, comprises a hook formed of two separable portions A, B, each suspended by a cable 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, means 19, (19<SP>1</SP>) clamping a cable in the hook, cutter means 25 severing a cable so hooked and means then disconnecting the portions A, B. The device includes oil reservoirs 4, 4<SP>1</SP> shaped as fins to prevent rotation of the device when lowered to the sea bed from a ship. Reservoirs 4, 4<SP>1</SP> contain electric motors 10, 11, (10<SP>1</SP>, 11<SP>1</SP>) connected to conductors in cables 3, 3<SP>1</SP>, and also contain pumps 8, 9, (8<SP>1</SP>, 9<SP>1</SP>) driven by the motors. When a cable enters the hooked portion load cells 31 indicate its presence, as do dynamometers on cable winches on the ship. Electric motors 10, (10<SP>1</SP>) are then operated, causing pumps 8, (8<SP>1</SP>) to supply oil to cylinders 12, (12<SP>1</SP>). Piston-rods 20, (20<SP>1</SP>) are thus retracted and levers 19, (19<SP>1</SP>) pivot in openings 18, 18<SP>1</SP> and clamp on to the cable. Motor 11 is then operated and pump 9 supplies oil to extend rod 28, thus pivoting blade 25 outwards. Electric motor (11<SP>1</SP>) on portion B is then operated and oil is supplied to extend plunger 14 (Fig. 2) which displaces portions A and B so that the clamped cable is severed between blade 25 and edge 26<SP>1</SP> on portion B. Continuing extension of plunger 14 releases the tongue and groove joints 1, 2 between the portions. The separate portions, each clamping an end of cable may then be brought to the surface.
