Abstract

Acrylic articles, particularly sheets, having enhanced optical properties and a mirror-like finish, are made by compressing a heat softened blank between a pair of polished elements coated with a thin film of lubricant, cooling the resultant article whilst under a pressure sufficient to maintain the reduced thickness to a temperature below its minimum softening temperature, and then releasing the pressure. The polished elements may be steel, glass, or aluminium plates and the lubricant which is preferably P.T.F.E., petroleum or silicone, may be applied initially to the elements or to the blank. In one embodiment, a sandwich comprising polished plates and a blank is compressed with the desired manner between the heatable and coolable platens of a conventional press, the sandwich either being preheated or being at ambient temperature before insertion into the press.
