Abstract

1,163,137. Authenticating bank notes. P. THURNBERGER. Dec.7, 1966 [Dec.11, 1965; Oct.1, 1966], No.54718/66. Heading G1A. Apparatus for determining whether bank notes have been produced by simultaneous printing and include steel gravure printed areas, comprises an arrangement for checking the registration of the printing on both sides, and a means for measuring variations in thickness arising from the steel gravure printing. Both sides of the note are scanned in synchronism by a photoelectric system and the resulting signals are compared, and the thickness is subsequently measured by a feeler attached to a pressure sensitive transducer such as a Piezo-electric crystal or a strip extensometer. The thickness may be gauged by a pair of feeler capacitor electrodes connected in a high-frequency resonant circuit, and the boundary dimensions may be verified by a plurality of contacts mounted on an insulator on one side of a note and a conductive plate on the other additional contacts across the note may be used to reveal torn or holed notes. The surface may additionally be photo-electrically inspected for reflectance and colour. Reference signals may be on a magnetic tape.
