Abstract

1,163,110. Lasers. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 23 Dec., 1966 [2 Feb., 1966], No. 57701/66. Heading H1C. A Q-switched laser system comprises a saturable dye and a rotating mirror. Ruby or neodymium doped glass rod 10 is pumped by xenon flash tube 12 in reflecting housing 22. One of the mirrors 16 of the optical cavity is rotatable in housing 30, which housing also includes a light source 32 and light detector 34 for synchronizing the firing of xenon flash tube 12 with the rotation of the mirror, Fig. 2 (not shown). In operation light 36a from source 32 is reflected from surface 17 when mirror 16 is in the position shown at T 1 , Fig. 3, and the signal from photo-diode 34 is fed to a pulse generator with a built-in time delay t d . At time T 3 the flash lamp 12 is energized for a period of t p during which time the laser rod is pumped. During the period from T 4 to T 5 whilst the rod is being pumped the reflectivity of the cavity is very low but as the mirror approaches the perpendicular just before the time T 5 some energy may be reflected back to the laser element. However, due to the saturable dye 18 the amount of light passing to the mirror is inhibited until the amount of energy absorbed is sufficient to bleach the dye. When this happens the mirror is perpendicular, time T 5 , and a pulse is obtained through partially transparent mirror 14. The dye solution may be cryptocyanine in methyl alcohol, vanadium phthalocyanine, and lithium phthalocyanine.
