Abstract

1279300 Lasers TRW Inc 8 July 1969 34346/69 Heading H1C The resonator of a Q-switched laser includes a plane polarizing Glan prism 18 positioned between a normally biased Kerr cell 20 and an unbiased Pockel's cell 22. When the laser active medium 28, e.g. a neodymium-doped YAG rod, is flash pumped by a lamp 30 energized from a trigger generator 38, the polarization rotation produced by the Kerr cell causes radiation from the active medium to be initially deflected by the prism towards an absorber 34. After a delay imposed by a delay circuit 42, the Kerr cell bias is removed by a modulator 44 and the radiation is able to oscillate between the resonator mirrors 14, 16. The radiation peak is detected by a photodiode 46 aligned with mirror 14, and after a further delay produced by a delay line 50, the Pockel's cell is biased and restores polarization rotation. Output radiation 36 is then deflected by the prism out of the resonator. The active medium and flash lamp are housed in an aluminium casing 32.
