Abstract

116,305. Wye, G. P. van. March 26, 1917. Ordnance, mechanical. - Relates to catapults for throwing projectiles or other objects, and consists in providing a frame manually supported with one end resting on the ground and a throwing arm pivotally connected to the frame and provided with a semi-circular guide over which passes a wire cord connected to a spring or springs adjustably connected to the frame, the throwing arm being held in its retracted position with the spring or springs stressed and substantially parallel with the frame by a releasable trigger device. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a throwing-arm 5 is pivoted at 13 to a frame 6 which is held at the inclination shown, with an adjustable spade 57 engaging the ground, by two operators each gripping two handles 52, 53 on either side of the frame. The arm 5 carries at one end a projectile-holder 23 and at the other end a semi-circular structure 10 around which passes a wire rope 18, one end of which is fixed to a pin 16 on the structure, the other end being connected through a plate x to a set of tension springs 35 anchored to an adjustable plate 38. The arm 5 is held in the position shown in full lines, with the springs stressed, by a trigger 43 which is tripped to release the arm by means of a spring-controlled pivoted plate 47 operated by a cord 48. The arm is arrested by buffers 56 engaging with projecting portions of the pin 16.
