Abstract

1,162,824. Controlling burners. HONEYWELL Inc. 7 Sept., 1966 [7 Sept., 1965; 3 Feb., 1966], No. 40048/66. Heading F4T. In a multiple burner control system each burner has a flame-detecting means with an input in the form of a photo-electric cell 23 . . . 26 and an output in the form of a flame relay B . . . E each including a normally closed switch and a normally open switch of which the normally open switches are connected in series to the winding of a relay A having a normally open switch A1 connected in parallel with the normally open switch of the manual start controller 13 and the normally closed switch of each flame relay is connected to a flame failure indicator such as neon bulb 30 . . . 33. A lower voltage source 40 provides a sustaining voltage for the neon bulbs which are not ignited by this voltage. When the manual start controller 13 is actuated the source 40 is removed from the bulbs and a main fuel valve 50 is opened and when a flame is established at each of the burners the relays B . . . E are energized to energize relay A to close switch A1 and allow release of controller 13. If one of the burners experiences a flame failure, its relay normally closed switch is closed to apply a start voltage pulse to its neon bulb and the open switch deenergizes relay A thus opening the fuel valve 50. In a modification, Fig. 2, the flame failure indicating means comprises a silicon-controlled rectifier 101 . . . 104 which has an initiating voltage applied to the gate thereof and a sustaining voltage applied to the anode thereof. The system may be applied to both unison and sequential pilot-lighting arrangements.
