An indenter for testing the hardness of metals has a tip 4 consisting of at least one carbide of a refractory metal of Groups IVA, VA, VIA e.g. tantalum, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium or niobium, the carbide having been consolidated into a substantially non-porous mass by melting, such as by using an electric arc or electron beam.
