Abstract
1,162,449. Electrophonic musical instruments. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 April, 1968 [8 April, 1967], No. 16537/68. Heading G5J. A circuit for imitating the touch of a percussive musical instrument is arranged so that the build-up time of the note from a tone generator is kept substantially constant or made to vary less than does the duration of actuation of the key 1 resulting from variation in touch intensity. The key is mechanically coupled to a magnet 2 such that actuation of the key will cause flux lines from the magnet to cut an inductance L so inducing a voltage therein which is fed through a diode D to a capacitor C. In accordance with this invention diode D is biased by a battery B such that it will only conduct when the voltage induced across L is greater than the battery voltage. Biasing of the diode D reduces the ratio between the build-up times for the softest and loudest touches on the key. A resistor R is used to reduce the ratio of the capcitor voltages for the loudest and softest touch so that they more nearly equal the ratio of the intensity of actuation for the loudest and softest touch. Fig. 3 (not shown), illustrates the further modification of placing an element X in the circuit between resistor R and diode D to compensate for the diode in the initial part of its characteristic if the voltage induced in the coil for the softest touch (the least touch to produce an audible note) only just exceeds the battery voltage. Element X is such that its resistance increases with increasing current in the initial part of the forward characteristic of the diode, for example a tunnel diode. Fig. 5 (not shown), illustrates a method of reducing still further the ratio of the capacitor voltages for the loudest and softest touch by connecting a further diode, reverse biased by a voltage E 2 , in parallel with inductance L, the effects of which are shown in Fig. 6 (not shown). Two alternative methods of providing a voltage threshold for the diode D are described, one in which a diode with an inherent voltage threshold is used and one in which a battery in series with a resistor is connected in parallel with the diode.
