Abstract

1,162,177. Automatic circuit breakers. SQUARE D CO. 27 Oct., 1967 [5 Nov., 1966], No. 49691/66. Heading H1N. In a circuit-breaker of the kind comprising a pivoted releasably latched trip lever 40 and a pivoted latch 44 within a moulded case 20, the electromagnetic tripping device 56 comprises a coil 67 in series with the contacts 28, 30 and a plunder 60 retractable into the coil when a predetermined overload current flows. The outer end of plunger 60 is circumferentially grooved, 60b, to receive the end of a bent-over part 45 of the latch 44. A bimetal element 70 in series with the contacts is arranged to move the plunger 60 into the coil when sufficiently heated by a small prolonged overcurrent. For a breaker of low rating the coil 67 may be of nickel-chromium wire to provide extra heating to the bimetal 70.
