Gas to be contacted with a liquid enters a chamber 2 containing a body of the liquid in its base and passes together with entrained liquid through one or more openinigs 3 into a mixing chamber 5 leading to a gas/liquid separating chamber 7 having contact plates 8 and a gas outlet 9. The opening or openings 3 is or are so arranged that the gas enters the mixing chamber 5 tangentially. The gas may traverse two or more mixing chainhers in parallel discharging into a common separating chamber.
