Abstract
1,161,956. Extruding tubing. V. MORRILL. 11 March, 1968, No. 11742/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C1] In a method of continuously forming highprecision tubing, a heat-softenable material is melted and then flowed between smooth surfaces of a vertically adjustable die 35 and a mandrel 36 and over the mandrel to form a tube, the tube then being drawn away from the die and mandrel and over a control member 37 within the tube while at the same time cooling the tube and flowing a gas through an annular zone between the tube and the control member, the flow of gas being regulated through the zone to control the final dimensions of the tubing, the tube being continually drawn away from the control member, its cross-section being reduced until the tube has cooled sufficiently for it to be no longer ductile under the drawing effort. Any change in the gas pressure flowing through the annular zone is automatically detected and this is corrected simultaneously with any changes in rate of material feed to be melted, melting temperature and molten material level. The die, mandrel and control member are rotated. A rod (104), Fig. 2 (not shown), of heatsoftenable material is regulably fed into the cup of die 35, is firstly preheated by an electric resistance source and a variable gas source (120) and is then melted by two sources, a high-frequency (or radio-frequency) induction heater and a controllable gas heater (120<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 17, not shown.
