Abstract

1,161,901. Seaming non-metallic sheet materials; laminates. W. BAHLSEN. 12 July, 1966 [3 Sept., 1965], No. 31324/66. Headings B5K and B5N. Two webs 301, 302 at least one of which has a surface of thermoplastic resinous material, are bonded together by exposing the webs to the action of stationary means for generating an alternating magnetic field to heat by induction a metal layer of which the whole area is in contact with the thermoplastic surface and subsequently applying pressure to the webs. The webs 301, 302 may be of metal foil and paper, respectively, and at least one is coated with a thermoplastic synthetic resin on the surface which faces the other web. Instead of metal foil, e.g. aluminium or iron foil, a metal screen, wire mesh or gauze may be placed in contact with the surfaces to be bonded or previously applied to one of these surfaces. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the webs 301, 302 pass between rollers 303, 304 and through the slot-shaped opening of a coil 305 connected to a medium or low-frequency generator. The alternating magnetic field produced by the coil 305 induces eddy currents in the metal foil web 301 so that the foil is heated to soften the thermoplastic coating. Pressure rollers 307, 308 bond the webs together. The distance between the coil 305 and the rollers 307, 308 is adjustable. In another embodiment, Fig. 4, magnets 310, 311, 312 having windings 313, 314, 315 are arranged above the webs 301, 302. Each magnet has associated therewith, below the webs, an iron element, such as 316, which may be provided with a winding 317. The magnets may be staggered, as shown, or the magnet 312 may be positioned at the location 318 or a single magnet extending across the whole width of the web may be provided. If the magnets are staggered, the pressure rollers 319, 320 may be staggered in the same manner. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the arms of adjacent magnets are arranged in a line while a body portion of each magnet is made narrow to provide recesses to accommodate the windings out of contact with each other. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, a single magnet 327 having windings 328 has arms which converge at their lower ends 329, 330 to form a gap in which a very dense magnetic field is formed upon supply of energy to the windings 328, Fig. 8 (not shown). Pressure is applied by rollers 332, 333. The roller 332 is arranged below the arm 329 and may be secured to the mount of the magnet 327 so that the magnet and roller may be removed or swung aside as a unit when the webs are threaded through the apparatus. This removable unit may also include the roller 333.
