Abstract
1,161,797. Methine dye intermediates. GEVAERT-AGFA N.V. 14 Aug., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40141/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C4, G2 and H1] 1 : 2 - Dimethyl - and 1 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - chloromethylsulphonylbenzimidazole are made by reducing with hydrogen and Raney nickel and then heating with acetic anhydride, 2- nitro - 4 - chloromethylsulphonyl - N - methyl - and-N-ethyl-aniline obtained by heating 2- nitro - 4 - chloromethylsulphonyl - chlorobenzene with methylamine and ethylamine respectively. 1 - Ethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - [(2 - chloro 1 : 1 : 2 . trifluoroethyl) sulphonyl] benzimidazole is made by hydrogenating in the presence of acetic anhydride and acetic acid and then heating with H 2 SO 4 2 - nitro - 4 - [(2 - chloro - 1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoroethyl) sulphonyl]-N-ethylaniline obtained by heating with ethylamine, 2-nitro-4-[(2- chloro - 1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoroethyl) sulphonyl] chlorobenzene which is prepared by nitration of 4 - [(2 - chloro - 1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoroethyl) sulphonyl] chlorobenzene. The latter is made by oxidizing 4 - [(2 - chloro - 1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoro - ethyl) thio] chlorobenzene made by reacting 1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoro - 2 - chloro - ethane with 4 - chlorothiophenol. 1 : 3 - Diethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - [(2 - chloro - 1 : 1 :2 - trifluoroethyl) sulphonyl] benzimidazolium iodide is prepared by quaternizing 1 - ethyl - 2 - methyl - 5 - [(2 - chloro - 1 : 1 : 2 - trifluoroethyl) sulphonyl] benzimidazole with ethyl iodide.
