Abstract

1,161,783. Rotary hydraulic pumps and motors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug.25, 1966 [Aug. 27, 1965; April 14, 1966], Nos. 36895/65 and 16473/66. Heading F1F. In a rotary hydraulic pump or motor of the rotary abutment type, comprising rotary abutments 4, Fig. 3, co-operable with radially extending projections 31 on a cylindrical member 3 coaxially mounted within a cylindrical casing member 1 and wherein either the cylindrical member 3 or the casing member 1 rotates, the cylindrical surfaces of the member 3 or the partcylindrical surfaces of the abutments 4 are covered with a layer of flexible sealing material. Preferably the material is strips of oil-resistant synthetic rubber. As shown in Fig. 3, strips 6 are bonded to the member 3 with the ends of the strips inserted in slots 32 at the root edges of the projections 31. Strips 7 of oil-resistant synthetic rubber may also be bonded to the sides of each of the part-cylindrical pockets 8 in which the abutments rotate. In an alternative embodiment, Fig.4 (not shown), strips (10) of oil-resistant synthetic rubber are bonded to the abutments 4. The abutments 4 are inter-connected with a shaft 2 on which the member 3 is mounted by gearing. With five abutments and three projections, the abutments rotate at three times shaft speed. Operating as a motor with the member 3 rotating clockwise, high-pressure oil passes through a bore 47 in the shaft 2 and passages 45 to the trailing face of each projection 31 and passages 49 at the leading face of each projection exhaust the reduced pressure oil through another bore 48 in the shaft 2. The outer radial ends of the projections 31 may include strips 9 of Babbit metal to form running seals. Similarly the end-faces of the member 3 include strips of Babbit metal. To reduce wear and friction forces in the rolling of the abutments 4 on the cylindrical surface of the member 3, a thin layer of, e.g., stainless steel, brass or plastics material may be bonded to the outer surfaces of the strips 6, 7 or (10).
