Abstract
1,161,695. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. 13 June, 1967 [17 June, 1966], No. 27171/66. Heading F2E. A reaction-type brake caliper comprises a body portion 10 (Fig. 2) having a pair of radially spaced arms 12 (shown as C-shaped in Fig. 3) straddling the disc and connected at their free ends by a strap or beam 14, the pad assemblies 22, 24 and 26, 28 being radially held and guided by bars or plates 16 detachably arranged on the inside faces of the arms. As shown in Fig. 5, the bars 16 slot over pins 20 and are bolted at 18 (Fig. 2) so that by removing the bars the pads may be withdrawn radially. The body is pivoted at 11 and pressure is applied to the left pad hydraulically by two pistons 32 (Fig. 2) and mechanically as shown in Fig. 5. Rotation of the member 52 by a lever 46 causes balls 56 to ride up along cammed recesses in 52 to force member 44 to the right and thus apply pressure through thrust member 62, 66 to the pad. Automatic adjustment is effected by a pawl 70 acting on a ratchet during forward or backward movement of the brake arm, the ratchet being held in the new position by pin 74. Rotation of the ratchet wheel adjusts by means of the threaded portion 62, the effective length of the thrust member 62, 66. The brake disc (Fig. 6, not shown) is formed with a hub bolted to the axle flange.
