Abstract

1,161,477. Transferring workpieces to and from machine tools. CHURCHILL MACHINE TOOL Ltd. 15 March, 1968 [16 Dec., 1966], No. 56368/66. Heading B3B. [Also in Division B8] A loading and unloading device e.g. for a machine tool comprises a carriage 1 movable on a gantry 2 between supply and loading stations, the carriage 2 supporting a pair of arms 4, 5 each of which terminates in a work gripper, the arms 4, 5 being mechanically operatively interconnected so that e.g. as one arm moves towards and into work gripping position the other arm moves away therefrom. Each arm 4, 5 is supported by a pair of parallel links 7, 9 and 8, 10 the upper link of each pair being the shorter of the pair in order to provide substantially straight-line motion of the work gripper. An oscillatable crank 12 is driven by a drive shaft 11 and is connected to a rocker arm 14a which actuates and is common to both arms 4, 5. The pivotal mounting point 21a of link 10 for the arm 5 is itself located on an arm 37 which can be displaced by cam means 40, 41 in order to modify the position into which a treated workpiece is released e.g. adjacent the supply point for untreated workpieces. The work-gripping devices are opened and closed at appropriate cycle times under the control of respective oscillatable cams 35; and each work gripper comprises jaws 6b operated by toggle levers 23, 24, urged to closed position by a spring 22 and opened by a rod 26 which passes through the arm 4 or 5 and is moved longitudinally in its arm by a quadrant 28 controlled by a rod 32.
