Abstract

1,161,397. Measuring oxygen content electrochemically. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. Sept. 18, 1967 [Aug. 18, 1966], No.37139/66. Heading G1N. Apparatus for continuously measuring the dissolved oxygen content of a stream of fluid comprises a central stainless steel tubular duct 6 through which the fluid-flows having a perforated section surrounded by an electro-chemical cell comprising an oxygen-permeable membrane 5 which is impermeable to liquid or dissolved ions, in contact with a perforated silver, gold or platinum cathode 7 whereon oxygen entering through the membrane reacts to produce hydroxyl ions which are consumed in the total cell reaction to cause a current to flow in an external circuit proportional to the concentration of oxygen in the fluid in the duct 6. Surrounding the cathode 7 is an anode 10 made from a strip of lead foil sandwiched between two layers of plastics material or nylon mesh and formed into a roll. Radial holes are drilled through the anode. The cell electrolyte may be a saturated aqueous solution of potassium hydrogen phosphate, dilute sulphuric acid or a dispersion of potassium hydrogen phosphate in Agar-Agar jelly. The membrane 5 may be À002" thick and made of polythene or À005" thick and made of P.T.F.E. The cell casing 1 is made of polymethylmethacrylate and the joints are sealed with wax enabling the joints to be broken for cleaning the cell.
