1422172 Electro-chemical analysis SIEMENS AG 2 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972] 264/73 Heading G1N The concentration of sugar in a liquid e.g. glu- cose in blood is measured by using the liquid as an electrolyte in an electro-chemical cell. A cell comprising a platinized platinum electrode which reacts with glucose and a counter-electrode of silver or platinum is supplied with a constant current from a suitable cell through a switch and the electrochemical cell voltage is supplied, if the two cells are implanted in a patient's body, via leads extending through the patient's skin and an amplifier to an indicator. The switch may be activated by passing radiation through the skin. The cell may be supplied with a constant voltage in which case a voltage proportional to the cell current is supplied to the indicator. Alternatively the electrodes may be supplied with a constant current for a short period of time and the resulting cell voltage monitored to give the transition time of the cell which is a function of sugar concentration. In this case the leads are connected via an amplifier and threshold stages to a counter which is activated and de-activated by the signals from the threshold stages. The cells may be operated by an internal source of current in which case each cell includes three electrodes separated from each other and the liquid by partitions made of hydrophilic material (ionexchangers). The outer electrodes may consist of a silver gauze having a layer of carbon and the third electrode positioned between them of platinized platinum. The output of the cell is applied to an implanted transmitter which transmits signals to a receiver.
