Abstract

1,161,391. Polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 2 March, 1967 [30 March, 1966; 8 Aug., 1966], Nos. 14077/66 and 35414/66. Heading C3R. Polyamides having an improved colour and an improved affinity for acid dyestuffs are made by effecting the polyamidification reaction in the presence of a salt of an aromatic hydrocarbon polysulphonic acid and a diamine, the amount of the salt being such as to provide 0À1-5À0 mol per cent of polysulphonic acid and 0À1-7À0 mol per cent of diamine based on the recurring units of the polyamide. Specified salts are those of benzene, toluene and a naphthalene di- or trisulphonic acids and C 2-18 aliphatic diamines, piperazine, 4-dimethylaminopyridine and 1: 4- diazobicyclo-(2: 2: 2)-octane. The reactants used to make the amides are (i) aminocarboxylic acids or their lactams (e.g. epsilon-aminocaproic acid or its lactam, 6-aminononanoic acid, 11-aminoundecanoic acid; 17-aminoheptadecanoic acid, dodecanolactam, enanotholactam or capryllactam) or (ii) substantially equimolecular proportions of a diamine (e.g. a C 2-12 aliphatic diamine or m- or p-xylylenediamine) and a dicarboxylic acid (e.g. an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid). Examples describe the polymerization of hexamethylene diammonium adipate in the presence of various amine salts of polysulphonic acids.
