Abstract

1,161,249. Air cushion vehicles. BELL AEROSPACE CORP. 10 Aug., 1967 [29 Aug., 1966], No. 36689/67. Heading B7K. The skirt for an air cushion comprises an inflated flexible looped skirt 30 having slots 32 forming nozzles for air jets, the skirt 30 containing an inflatable tubular valve means 40 fixed to one edge of the slots 32 and formed so that when deflated it lies flat to close the slots 32, Fig. 4, and when inflated assumes a cylindrical form, opening the slots, the air jets being deflected inwardly to supply the air cushion, by Coanda effect round the cylindrical form of the inflated valve means 40. The valve means 40 is supplied by a conduit 46 with highpressure air, e.g. from fan 50, pilot controlled, e.g. through valve 49, to inflate and deflate the valve means 40. The valve means 40 may comprise a flexible upper part 42 and a stiffer lower part 44, the underside of which is reinforced with abrasion resistant means and projects below the skirt 30 to act as a skid. The skirt 30 may be inflated by centrifugal fans 16 rotated about an axis transverse to the supported vehicle (10), Fig. 1 (not shown). The vehicle (10) is shown having a cab 12 at the front, the centrifugal fans 16 being towards the rear, the vehicle being propelled by a propeller (15) immediately in front of a rudder empennage (14) at the rear.
