Abstract

1,160,867. Bearings. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 26 Oct., 1967 [26 Oct., 1966], No. 48005/66. Heading F2A. In a magnetic bearing for a vertical spindle, each magnet is annular and has located therein an insert of soft magnetic material which forms a magnetic circuit therewith, the pole-faces of the two inserts being positioned opposite to each other. In an embodiment a spindle 4 of a watt-hour meter is supported vertically by means of a magnetic bearing 7 and is guided radially by means of pintle bearings 5 and 6. The magnetic bearing comprises a mild steel annular core-insert 11 which is mounted at the lower end of the spindle 4, the insert 11 being provided with a flange 12 to which a magnet 14 is secured by adhesion, for example. A cover 32 is provided to prevent the accumulation of magnetic dust particles between the pole faces of the core and its magnet. A cover 33 is likewise provided for an opposing mild steel annular core insert 15 and its magnet 17. The pintle bearing 5 comprises a pintle 23, one end of which is received in a bearing-bush 24 mounted in one end of the spindle 4 and the other end of which is fixed to a non-magnetic member 22. The latter is mounted in a lower part 18 of the core insert 15 which is clamped to an extension 19 of the meter frame by means of a screw 20. The pintle 23 of the pintle bearing 6 is likewise received by a bush 24 and is fixed to a member 22, the latter being mounted in a housing 26 which is carried by an extension 27 of the meter frame.
