Abstract

1,160,718. Travelling - wave tubes. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 30 Sept., 1966 [4 Oct., 1965], No. 43824/66. Heading HID. The helix of a travelling-wave tube and the dielectric support rods therefor are mounted within the metal envelope of the tube by a shrink-fit process carried out under non- oxidizing conditions. The tube envelope is mounted in a holder 20 provided with a succession of spacers 32 and centring wafers 34 which are slotted to permit evacuation, and which prevent bowing of the envelope. A mandrel (Fig. 2, not shown) is inserted through the port 16 in plate 12 and through the holder 20 such that its end section projects beyond the latter, whereafter the envelope is introduced into its holder and the helix and its graphite coated support rods mounted in end slots of the projecting portion of the mandrel, with the rods projecting slightly beyond its periphery. Plate 12 is then clamped to vacuum chamber 74, which is evacuated and heated by induction coil 78 to 800‹ to 1200‹ C., whereby the stainless steel envelope expands sufficiently with respect to the assembly of molybdenum helix and mandrel and alumina or beryllia ceramic support rods to permit the assembly to be pulled into the envelope, where the rods and helix are held by a shrink fit upon cooling. The use of dry hydrogen instead of a vacuum, and heating by passing a current through the envelope or its holder, are also referred to.
