Abstract

1,160,673. Colour synthesis. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 20 April, 1967 [2 May, 1966], No. 19212/66. Heading G4B. [Also in Division G2] A device for the synthesis of colours comprises (a) a plurality of opaque coloured elements displaying the three subtractive primary colours in steps of increasing colour strength and binary combinations of those primary colours also in steps of increasing colour strength; and (b) a plurality of transparent elements displaying a neutral grey colour in steps of increasing colour strength, the opaque elements being arranged in groups, the groups or each group being mounted on backing material and any selected transparent element being superimposable at will upon any selected opaque element. In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2 the device comprises a threepage colour atlas, the page shown including elements 3 which are combinations of the colours cyan and yellow, and a mask 6 including a holder 7 for transparent film carrying the neutral grey elements. The mask may be positioned so that any one element 3 can be viewed through apertures (10) (Fig. 3, not shown), 11. The various colour and neutral grey strengths are indicated by reference characters e.g. CO-C15, YO-Y15. Also disclosed is a method of colouring a substrate to match a given coloured pattern comprising the steps of (a) synthesizing by means of the device a colour matching the pattern; (b) assigning reference co-ordinates to the combination of the selected opaque element and transparent element; (c) transmitting these co-ordinates together with other necessary data concerning the substrate, the dyes or pigments to be used and the coloration process to be employed to computer means which is programmed to convert the information into a colouring recipe; (d) preparing a colouring composition in accordance with the recipe; and (e) applying the composition to the substrate using the process. The reference coordinates may be the tristimulus values. The co-ordinates may be read directly from the device using a tristimulus colorimeter or a spectrophotometer, or the reference characters may first be read and then using tables converted into the reference co-ordinates. Alternatively the characters may be fed to a computer memory store which corelates the characters with the appropriate co-ordinates.
