Abstract

1,160,535. Composite glass fibre. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Oct., 1967 [25 Oct., 1966; 21 Feb., 1967], Nos. 47870/66 and 8235/67. Heading C1M. A composite light-transmitting dielectric fibre comprises a glass fibre core covered with a glass cladding of lower refractive index. Both glasses are either (a) alkaline earth aluminate or (b) alkaline earth aluminosilicate. The compositions of these two glasses may fall, in wt. % in the following ranges: (a) MgO, 0-75; CaO, 0-75; BaO, 0-75; Al 2 O 3 , 25-45; SiO 2 , 0-10; BeO, 0-75; La 2 O 3 , 0-10; SrO, 0-75; (b) MgO, 0-10; CaO, 0-40; BaO, 0-60; Al 2 O 3 , 5-20; SiO 2 , 20-60. The composite fibres may be drawn through a platinum die.
