Abstract

1,160,270. Hydraulic and pneumatic reciprocating motors; valve gear. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Nov. 22, 1966 [Nov. 25, 1965], No. 50088/65. Headings F1A, F1M and F1S. A hydraulic or pneumatic motor for actuating a portable tool, e.g. a drill, has differential working chambers 7 and 8, chamber 8 being continuously supplied with pressure fluid from connection 9, and chamber 7 being alternately connected to supply and exhaust by a slide valve 19 actuated by fluid-pressure controlled by valve means 14, 15 on the motor piston section 3. To prevent pulsations in the low-pressure hose connection 12, it is connected by pipe 36 to a chamber 31, which increases in volume as working chamber 7 decreases in volume, so that during the upward stroke of piston 1 part of the exhaust fluid from chamber 7 passes to chamber 31 and the rest through connection 12. On the following downward stroke, the fluid in chamber 31 passes to connection 12. The effective surface areas of the piston 1 in chambers 8 and 31 are each half the effective area of the piston in chamber 7. Drive is transmitted by piston 1 striking the tool 32. In the embodiment Fig. 2 (not shown), the lower end of the piston (41) is made massive to act as a hammer, and is guided in a chamber connected to exhaust, an intermediate portion of the piston working in a chamber continuously supplied with pressure fluid, and the upper portion of the piston working in a chamber alternately connected to pressure and exhaust by the slide valve. In the embodiment Fig. 3 (not shown), the piston has integral piston rods extending through either end of the housing, one rod (76) engaging the tool (99). An upper working chamber (78) is continuously connected to pressure, an intermediate.chamber (73) is connected to exhaust and a lower chamber is alternately connected to pressure and exhaust by the slide valve.
