Abstract

1,160,168. Welding by fusion. MUREX WELDING PROCESSES Ltd. 21 March, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 16367/67. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A tubular arc welding electrode is constituted by a sheath of deep drawing quality mild steel containing 0À3-0À4% manganese, and a core of iron powder plus sufficient manganese (e.g., present as ferro-manganese) to yield an overall content of manganese in the electrode of 1-1À5%, the silicon content of the electrode being 0À2% max. and the core optionally including titanium, aluminium, zirconium, vanadium, niobium, cerium or other rare earth metal up to a total of 0.7% when present as metal or 1% 0 when present as ferro-alloy. The electrode is used in submerged arc welding with a calcium silicate flux or a flux of the following composition:- 5-10% MnO 2 30-45% SiO 2 15-30% CaO 5-12% CaF 2 5-25% Al 2 O 3 5-25% MgO An electrode comprising a sheath of 0À04% C, 0.3% Mn, 0.02% Si, 0À025% S, 0À025% P, balance Fe, enclosing a core constituting 40% of the electrode and containing 3.5% ferromanganese (80% Mn) produced the following weld deposit:-0À67% Mn, 0À3% Si, 0À07% C, balance Fe. An electrode as above but with the addition to the core of 0.5% ferro-titanium (25% Ti) and 0À1% ferro-zirconium (40% Zr) produced the following weld deposit:- 0.75% Mn, 0À02% Ti, 0.01% Zr, 0À07% C, 0À034 % Si, balance Fe.
