Abstract

1,160,153. Stabilizing ships. VOSPER Ltd. 27 Dec., 1967 [13 Jan., 1967], No. 1944/67. Heading B7M. The weight 3 of a moving weight ship stabilizer reciprocates in a horizontal tube 2 mounted athwartship and filled with water, valving being provided to enable the water pressurized by movement of the weight to be relieved. In the embodiment shown, each end of the tube 2 has a control valve 13 automatically controlled to maintain a set pressure (e.g. 20 lb./in.<SP>2</SP>) in the water in the tube in advance of the weight 3. Water which passes through the valve 13 at one end is discharged beneath the ship through pipes 12, 8 and an open valve 10 while simultaneously water is drawn into the other end of the tube through the other valve 10 and a one-way valve 9. Near the end of each stroke the weight covers the pipe 12 causing the discharging water to flow out at a reduced rate through a relief valve 14 whereby the weight is decelerated. Each end of the weight 3 has a mandrel (not shown) which enters a tube 7 at the respective end of the tube 2 to further decelerate the weight. The valve 13 is controlled electronically, Fig. 4 (not shown) by means responsive to the position or velocity of the weight and the pressure ahead of the weight. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) the pipes 8 are connected together through a single valve (16) which controls flow from one side of the weight to the other. Non- return valves (18,19) and possibly a pump (17) are provided for continuously exchanging heated water in the pipes with cool water from the exterior. The weight may be connected to opposite ends of the tube 2 by at least one strip of rubber.
