Abstract

1,160,021. Coating. FERRO CORP. 16 Jan., 1967 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 2143/67. Heading B2E. [Also in Divisions B5, B8, C3 and Dl] A fibreglass composition comprises fibreglass impregnated with 15-40% based on the combined weight of resin and fibreglass of a resin composition which contains (1) 50-95% of (a) polymeric polyallyl ester or (b) an unsaturated alkyd resin, (2) 50-5% of a polyallyl ester and (3) 0.1 - 10% of a stabiliser. The alkyd resin must be the esterification product of a diol with an equimolar quantity of a dibasic acid component which comprises 5-95% of an unsaturated dibasic acid or anhydride thereof and 95 - 5% of a saturated dibasic acid or anhydride thereof. The stabiliser is defined as being a compound containing straight chain carbon atoms each of which is attached by at least one valence to an oxygen atom with at least one of the carbon atoms being attached by two valencies to its oxygen atom. The valencies of the remaining oxygens are satisfied by hydrogen. Examples of stabilisers are acyloins and compounds of formula R.(CO) x R', X being 2 or more. The polymer resin can have a m.w. of 1,500-20,000. The composition can contain 1-10% of a specified peroxy - or azo - compound to act as a freeradical - generating catalyst. The catalyst can contain cobalt naphthaneate. The fibreglass can be in the form of cloth, roving, mat or filaments having diameters of 0.00006-0.0006 inch. The fibres can be modified by a silane. The fibre glass can be impregnated with a solution containing 20-80% resin and a volatile solvent, e.g. acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. The impregnating glass fibre composition is relatively non-hardening and can be wound up with a polyethylene sheet interleaf or impregnated filaments can be formed into a wound article by simultaneously winding into a mandrel and curing with U.V. light. The resin can be cured by exposure to radiation, e.g. from Co - 60, atomic piles, high power lined accelerators or U.V. light, e.g. of wavelength 120 - 320 m. The cure can be effected under pressure. A laminate can be formed assembling layers of a procured resin - impregnated glass cloth within a flexible polyvinyl alcohol bag, withdrawing the air to 50 mm Hg and exposing to U.V. light. The laminate can be cured in an oven.
