Abstract

115,996. Armstrong, D. H., and Gorder, A. H. van. Sept. 5, 1917. Projectiles.-Relates to projectiles of the kind described in Specification 7602/99, and consists in making the jacket for the soft-metal body of ductile wire sheathed with cotton or the like, the wire being wound helically to form a cylinder of which the convolutions are in contact with one another and are under stress, and the ends of the wire being embedded in the metal body. The bullet shown is made by coiling the sheathed wire 2 into cylindrical form with the ends 3, 4 extended axially, casting the body 5 within the wire jacket, thereby embedding the ends 3, 4, and then swaging the bullet endways. This operation shortens the body, increasing its diameter, and at the same time tensions the wire jaclcet whilst crowding the coils together. After surplus metal has been removed, a gas check (not shown) is applied to the body 5, for example as described in Specification 6925/06.
