Abstract
1,159,882. Metal melting furnaces. ROUND OAK STEEL WORKS Ltd. 19 April, 1968 [22 April, 1967], No. 18623/67. Heading F4B. A semi-continuous melting furnace comprises a rotary annular hearth 2with integral peripheral walls 4 and 5 and inclined at about 10 degrees to the horizontal, a separate non-rotary roof 3 with oxy/fuel burners 6 and arc electrodes 7 and peripheral discharge spouts 15 and tapholes 16, the roof being constructed in segments 10, the one shown entire in Fig. 1 forming a charging opening. The furnace is rotated in a clockwise direction and the burners are disposed above the downward slope and directed downwardly and backwardly. The electrodes 7 are disposed in zones 26, 27 and 28 giving long, medium and short arcs and offtakes 24 and 25 are provided for effluent gases. The furnace may be tapped intermittently through a spout 15 into ladle 29 or continuously through a taphole 16 with ladle moving from position 29A to 29AX. In a modification (Fig. 3) the furnace ring 17 rests on diametrically opposed rollers 18 mounted eccentrically so that the angle of tilt varies as the furnace rotates. In this case, the hearth is flat with no central shaft 4. Another modification (Fig. 4) has a flattish conical hearth and a final modification (Fig. 5) has the central shaft with an annular hearth having sides sloping up to walls 4 and 5. The furnace can be used for melting steel scrap with O 2 refining, finishings being added in the ladle, or in association with an arc furnace for producing alloy &c. steels. It may also be used for direct smelting to steel using coke and ore briquettes, preferably prereduced, or a mixture of briquettes and scrap.
