Abstract

1,159,819. Flocculating. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 28 Nov., 1966, No. 53211/66. Heading C1C. Finely divided organic waste is coagulated by treating with a water-soluble anionic polyelectrolyte of m.w. greater than 0.5 million and containing at least one sulphonate or carboxylate group per four monomer units followed by treatment with an inorganic coagulant. Preferred are poly (vinyl aromatic sulphonates) and copolymers therewith, styrene/ maleic anhydride polymers and polymers and copolymers of acrylic, methacrylic acids, carboxyethylacrylate and sulphoethylacrylates. Inorganic coagulants are FeCl 3 , FeSO 4 , Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 , CaCl 3 and lime.
