Abstract

Aqueous slurries of flocculated or agglomerated amorphous organic solids such as sewage sludges are treated to facilitate mechanical dewatering by treatment with at least one anionic polymer and at least one cationic polymer added successively in optional order, the polymers being organic, water-soluble, and of sufficiently high molecular weight to avoid redispersing the flocculated or agglomerated solids in the slurry. The polymer added first should have an ionic charge corresponding to the prevailing or net charge of the organic solids in the slurry. The cationic polymer is generally an amine or quaternary ammonium salt and the anionic polymer generally has a plurality of sulphonate or carboxylic groups. A large number of suitable polymers are exemplified.
