Abstract

1,159,652. Dialkyl phthalates. SCOTT BADER & CO. Ltd. 22 Dec., 1967 [25 Jan., 1967], No. 3762/67. Heading C2C. In an uncatalysed process for the manufacture of a dialkyl phthalate, a phthalic acid monoester dissolved a primary aliphatic alcohol containing at least three carbon atoms is reacted with an excess of the alcohol at 200- 320‹ C. under superatmospheric pressure. The reaction may be initiated in the presence of the required diester. The process may be operated continuously by first reacting phthalic anhydride with a primary aliphatic alcohol containing at least three carbon atoms to yield a phthalic acid monoester which is then treated as described above, unreacted alcohol and phthalic anhydride being recycled. Examples are given in which the alcohols used are n-butyl alcohol, a mixture of C 7-9 primary alcohols and 2-ethylhexanol.
