An electrode holder for a resistance spotwelding electrode has an internal chamber 20 through which coolant e.g. water, is arranged to be circulated to pass around the exterior of part of the electrode 34 in the chamber, the holder including means 16 for adjusting the position of the electrode longitudinally in the holder. A fluid-tight seal is formed at the mouth 13 of the holder by using a split, tapered collet 14 which screws into part 12 of the holder. Coolant entering the chamber 20 via an inlet 26 fed by a duct 23 and nipple 28 leaves via peripheral bores 30 in the adjuster 16 and a nipple 32. The bore 11 of the holder is internally screwthreaded and is engaged by threads on the adjuster 16 which when screwed down the bore pushes the electrode out of the collet 14 to a desired amount. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the adjuster (47) is fixed by grub-screws to the electrode and a shaft (50) projecting from the holder at the opposite end to the electrode. The shaft may have a projecting end specially adapted to facilitate its turning. A water-tight seal is made at the end from which the electrode projects by means of a sealing ring (45) compressed by a gland screw (46) screwed into the extreme end (41) of the tip closure (39), and at the end from which the shaft projects by means of a closure screw (52), sealing ring (55) and gland screw (56). The holders may be mounted in either movable or fixed carriers of spot-welding machines. As an alternative the electrode may be screw-threaded for engagement with the thread of the holder so that the position of the electrode in the holder can be adjusted by relative rotation of electrode and holder
