Abstract

1,159,347. Image intensifier tubes. MULLARD Ltd. 6 June, 1968 [12 July, 1967], No. 32016/67. Heading H1D. [Also in Divisions H4 and H5] A particle or radiation quantum detector system comprises a channel intensifier device I having an output electrode in the form of a plurality of rows of conductors E2 and having a plurality of target conductors T arranged in columns, so that an input particle causes secondary electron emission in the channel portion I resulting in an output signal in an output electrode and in a target conductor according to the position of the input particle. The intensifier may but need not include a photo-cathode (not shown) and the target conductors T may be coated with luminescent material or may be coatings on a luminescent layer to give a visual output, and the device may be included in an envelope, though this is not necessary in space applications. The outputs from the rows and columns may be fed to a ferrite core store supplying a cathode ray display (Fig. 4, not shown). In Fig. 5 the outputs are fed to row and column registers connected by respective exclusive OR gates 1 and to an AND gate 3. Only when there is a single event stored in both registers is there an output from gate 3 which opens gate 4 and sets a bi-stable 6 which opens switch 7, to prevent the recording of a further event, and opens gate 8 to allow clock pulses to step the row register and also, through a divider 10, the column register. The divider 10 also synchronizes the scanning of a storage display tube to which a bright-up pulse is supplied from AND gate 9 when the stored pulses have been driven to the ends of both registers; this pulse also re-sets the bi-stable 6 which closes the switch 7 so that the system is ready to record another event. The system may be used for X-ray or gamma ray radiography.
