Abstract

1,159,151. Polyamide preparation. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 April, 1967 [22 April, 1966], No. 17729/66. Heading C3R. Polyamides of fibre-forming molecular weight are prepared by a continuous process wherein a salt of a diamine and a dicarboxylic acid, an aminocarboxylic acid or a lower molecular weight polymer thereof is subjected to polymerization temperatures in an elongate reaction zone whilst maintained in a state of annular flow by means of a rapid current of inert gas. The cross-section of the elongate zone, which may be a straight or coiled tube, may increase, progressively or in steps, but must not decrease from the inlet to the outlet. Specified inert gases are nitrogen, argon and hydrogen. Numerous polyamides are mentioned; in examples the process is applied to (1) 66 salt plus excess diamine; (2), (4), (5) and (8) 66 polymer of R.V. 50 or 48; (3) 66 polymer of R.V. 40 plus acetic acid viscosity stabilizer; (6) 68 polymer of R.V. 55; and (7) 66 salt containing Cu borate and KI.
