Abstract
1,159,035. Methanol synthesis. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 July, 1966 [18 Aug., 1965; 27 Sept., 1965], Nos. 35368/65 and 41002/65. Heading C2C. Methanol is prepared by reacting carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide or both with hydrogen at a pressure in the range 10 to 150 atmospheres and a temperature in the range 160 to 300 C. in the presence of a catalyst containing the oxides of copper and zinc and at least one difficultly reducible oxide of at least one other metal from Groups II to IV of the Periodic Table, removing methanol from the reaction mixture and recycling unconverted reactants to the catalyst. The term " oxides " as applied to the catalyst composition is defined as the reduction product of the initial mixture of metal oxides under the conditions of the synthesis process. The catalyst preferably contains at least 20% (by metal atoms) of copper, less than 70% zinc and 4 to 20% of the other metal oxide or oxides, e.g. alumina, magnesia, titania, zirconia, ceria or thoria. The feed gas for the process preferably contains 1-20% by volume of carbon dioxide and up to 10 times the stoichiometric concentration of hydrogen required to react with all the carbon oxides present and may be prepared in a primary hydrocarbonsteam reforming process. The process is exemplified using a catalyst comprising the oxides of copper, zinc and aluminium.
