1,158,860. Motor vehicles; vehicle frames; vehicle bodies. DR. ING. h.c.F. PORSCHE K.G. 29 May, 1968 [15 June, 1967], No. 25699/68. Headings B7B, B7D and B7H. A passenger vehicle comprises a body with opposite sidewalls, front and rear wheels 2, 3 defining a wheelbase s, storage compartments 7, 8 at the front and rear adjacent a passenger compartment 4 provided within the wheelbase, a drive unit disposed substantially within the wheelbase s and including an internal combustion engine 20, a change-speed gear-box 21 and a differential gear 22 for driving the rear wheels 3, the engine being a flat water-cooled engine with its crank-shaft axis Y-Y extending longitudinally centrally of the vehicle and having a single horizontal row of cylinders 26 on the opposite side of the axis Y-Y to a liquid-air heat exchanger 27, for cooling the engine, mounted at the same height as the cylinders 26. A blower 28, belt-driven from the engine, draws air through an inlet grille 35, and a duct 32 in the hollow sidewall 33/34, and directs it through the heat exchanger 27. The engine and heat exchanger assembly are disposed between two frame side members 14 and two cross members 16, 17 and below a flat floor plate 36. The gear-box extends below the cross member 17 and the fuel tank 41 is disposed below the floorplate 36 and between rearward extensions 40 of the cross member 17.
